Peer and Self Evaluation

Peer evaluation

I think the artist has definitely looked at the character in my ideas by the way she has put the make up on. I like the shape of the lips and how bright they are. For my character I wanted the lips to convey a message/signal to men. I believe this would come through as a message as they are very well shaped and are a bold colour. The eyebrows are another feature in the design, they look very neat and go down from the face, which is what I wanted. The shadowing around the eye I also like as it’s not too intense but gives a hint of smokiness. I didn’t want the eyes to be to dark otherwise it would of distracted away from the lips.  The eyes I lined around the eyes nicely I wanted it to be really subtle and not too thick, it was just there to show more definition, which I felt she definitely created.

I also like how the flick of the fringe turned out like a wave into the curls that looked like a really nice element to the design. It looks classic and something I wanted to have to tie the loose curls at the front.

I felt like she was listening to my ideas and what I had to say about the character. Her station was kept tidy and she looked professional with a brush holder and belt. She had her make up in a neat section and her hairbrushes in another. I felt the way she dealt with my model was good as well as she made her feel comfortable by her friendly attitude. She took her time and didn’t rush too much when applying anything. She was concentrating and really getting into creating the design.

She was helping with poses I wanted to convey with the model showing a keen interest for the image. It also showed that she knew what the character was like.

When working on the hair, the shape was becoming difficult for my artist to do. I wanted it like a twisted bun on the side of the neck, however it was being created like a wedding hairstyle, which wasn’t really the look I was going for. I explained in my notes about creating a side ponytail then splitting it into three sections and twisting the strands around each other. I wanted it to be a bit loose. My artist kept on clipping the hair too high and making it tighter.

I would recommend practicing different bun shapes that you can create and researching different techniques for creating buns rather than the formal wedding style shapes. I didn’t want the style to look to tight as I don’t think my character would of tightly styled it, but rather loosened it to make herself look presentable but not overly formal.

Overall I enjoyed working with this artist as they helped convey my character. I am pleased with how the images turned out as I think they show how I see Fraulein Kost through my eyes.

Self Evaluation

When creating a design that isn’t yours you really have to examine the charts and notes given to you to understand what the person wants from that design. At first I was a bit nervous about certain elements of the design like blocking eyebrows however once I practiced it I was fine with creating it on the day. I think the eyes work well and I’m pleased with the blocking of the eyebrows. The eye shadow was blended out nicely and the liner I think worked well in terms of being neat and working together as a eye make up shape.

I also got to experiment with the lip mix in our kits that I have never used before, as I never needed them for my looks. I think the dark lip mix with the red was a good contrast for a vampy lip.

The wig was another interesting technique that I learned when French plaiting the hair and twisting it together. The wig was then styled even more on the head with adding more clips and hairspray to make it stay in place. I like how the wig turned out and I think it works with the make up. The thing I did struggle on was getting the right angle of the eyebrow shape.

As she wanted them quite low I wanted to do them a bit higher. So for next time I will look at different eyebrow shapes and creating ones that are lower than usual, I did practice them beforehand however I needed to really get that angle right for the eyebrows she wanted.

Contemporary Image Practice and Final

Practice

Next time: I'll crimp the hair to make a bob shape at the bottom to add more volume. I will also apply
white by the lines and the lips to make them pop. I will also add gloss on the lips to enhance them.

I looked back at the practice and realised my design was to plain. I liked the way the eyebrows were shaped but should experiment more with my creativity.

Face chart

I liked how it turned out, by the abstract design on the nose. I think it adds club culture designs in there. With the backcombed bon and the red plaits, I think it mixes in with both the old and the new. The lips are extreme which I think looks really powerful. I choose a feather boa to add style and trashy glamour to the image. I  also think the white boa is a really nice contrast against the pink blusher and makes the colour pop more. If I were to do this again I would neaten some of the hair fraying around the bob.

Choose a scene- contemporary

Scene number - Act one Scene four

Special Notes about the scene: This is the first time she meets and speaks to Cliff. It is new years eve in the club so it is decorated with festive furnishings and is very busy.

Screen Play for Cabaret

How is it different?

The script and the film have very variations. The Brian character in the film is named 'Cliff and rather him be English he is American. Sally is also English in the script and American in the film. The roles of were they have come from have changed. When Sally and Cliff first met it was different as in the script they first met in the Kit Kat Klub seating by the telephone as Sally calls Cliff. Where the screenplay he meets her when in Fraulien Schnieders house and she takes Brain around to show him the house and says he has to stay.

The script to also says Sally enters the Frauleins schnielders house and offers her a deal of hundred marks to temporarily stay in the building, as max has kicked her out. The screen play though shows when Cliff first met Sally already in Fraulein Schnielders house with her own room.

The script for Fraulein Kost is more prominent in the script as she's in serval scenes with Fraulein Schnilder or being flirtatous around men. Whereas in the screen play she's not mentioned as they only focus on Sally, Brian, Emcee and Max. The other characters don't really have a part in the screen play as it mainly focuses on the love of Sally and Brian and the triangle with Max.

Anita Berber

She was known as a performer in the Weimar period, but also for her reputation of drugs and sleeping around with both men and women. The daughter of a very skilful violinist. She appeared first on stage in 1917 and quickly made headlines for her erotic dancing in the nude and her scandals private life, where she would have many affairs and be addicted to acolol and cocaine. Otto dix a famous painter in this period was fascinated by her lifetyle and character and painted a lot of portraits of what his vision was that she portrayed.

She defined the decadence of Berlin of its time, by the drug use and her outlandish performances. As she was addicted to cocaine she also had a famous concoction which she would make up that included chloroform and ether both lethal substances. She would dip this into a white rose and slowly chew away the petals to get the high she wanted.

As a stage perfumer her main aim was to shock and cause havoc among the audience. She would perform fantasy pieces with her then husband Sebastion droste such as- Sucide, Morphuim and Mad house.

Her hair and make up was simple, however as read when she's performing you could tell she was wearing make up. The popular colours of the 1920s were green and turquoise which I think she would have worn as she was also famously known to have bright red hair.

Her hair without it being red, was black and short. Was sometimes curled, wavy or straight. It was mainly short and shaped into a bob. She also wore many headress and hair accessories in her hair.

Contemporary Cabaret- Practices

Practising Hair

For my first design I barrel curled the hair at the bottom and made hair buns on the top. I created this look as as 1930's bob and a grunge look at the top. These hair buns were popular and were even used in party monster.

I wanted the bob to have more volume to I crimped the bob and backcombed it to create a bob shape. I made the hair buns at the top as from my presentation feefback they werent shown enough. I also included flower hair bands as a quirkly accesorry.

I then thought of keeping the back combed bob but adding something else rather than the scrunchies. I thought of adding a big plait down the sides to wrap around the bob. I thought this was still a contemporary and histroical design. I also played with aqua colour in the hair by applying red watercolour. I also got from my presentation feedback to think about the colour red as its a bold and dangerous signal which Sally wanted to show.

Scfi Practice

In Seemas lesson we were all given key words to add upon our hair designs. I got given 'Sc-fi' I thought of shapes of a furstic design and liked the big oval shapes ontop of the head. I also wanted to create a square style on the bob but found this difficult to achieve.

Practsing Make up

With all my pratices I was using supra colours and letting myself get creative. I thought of patterns and designs on the face. While looking through my research I saw abstract designs, with bold striking lines. I was playing around with shape and colour. The thing that striked me most about the club culture make up, is the Picasso relevance in some of the designs. I practiced this myself and liked the way it looked, how it looked like a different nose on one side. The lips I went more extreme to really make the cupids bow to stand out. They liked to accentuate the bow in the late 20's/30's but I made it really exaggerated to stand out.
