Where are they?- contemporary

She's performing in the Kit Kat Club on new years eve

Description of the room- It is described by having decorations around the club as its new years. It also mentions tables that have telephones on them for the public to speak to one another. Spotlights on the stage have been described making it the most visual point of the room. As its a busy club I would also expect the room to be smoky and foggy as most people used to smoke in this era.

In the scene Cliff asks saying 'are you trying to shock me?' I think the characters realise Sally is playing up to a decadence character with a crazy lifestyle. However its just an act Sally plays to make herself seem interesting enough to be successful.

To make more of a point she even says in the scene 'I used to love pretending I was someone else, someone quite mysterious and fascinating.' Until one day I grew up and realised I was mysterious and fascinating.' She knows herself that even when she was younger she would pretend to be other people she wasn't. Now she's older and has become a performer she now believes she can pull off the idea of it being her rather than acting like someone else.
