Fraulien Kost is a prostitute in Berlin in a time of decadence and corruption, prostitution was often the way women would sell themselves to live.
In the script she is living with Fraulien Schneider and brings home sailors. I think she chooses sailors over other guys because they are willing to pay more as they are away from home. She can ask for higher rates and they will pay for it. She asks to bring friends and I think her client base is sailors as they most likely promote her amongst other sailors.
In my make up design I would expect her to have striking lips. This would be an indicator for sailors to know who she was, with the bold red lip. The shape would be unique as well to show something different to the sailors. I would think because of her cost of living and food she wouldn't have a lot of money for herself. I believe before a night out to get herself flirty and fun she would drink. She only has one lipstick she brought to make her look more 'alluring'.
In the scene she's taking sailors out of her room as they scurry along the corridor. She works all through the night and sleeps in the day. More sailors would enter her room as she is recommend so often. This is why I don't think the make-up would be completely messy as she has a responsibility to keep it looking as clean as she can by quickly fixing herself up. She doesn't want any of the sailors being put off by her so up keep to look 'beautiful' is something she would have to greatly consider.
Her hair would be long due to the up keep and money, to pay for a short bob would be too expensive to maintain. She would have a style that was loose but seductive to men. Loose because if she needed to fix it up quickly it would be easier to continually fix. A hair accessory around her head could also show that she's trying to be glamourous.
She feels she has the need to seduce sailors which could of stemmed from a troubled background. I think her past life was very corrupt and that's why I think she likes the attention she gets from men and feels she has a 'duty'. I feel the character lacks a sense of belonging and she fulfils this need using sailors. At the end of feeling 'belonged' she can get paid for it. It's like the money is a reward for her to feel love.
I believe she ran away from her past life to live in Berlin as it was a 'city of freedom', freedom which she craved. She rarely saw her father, he was always distant forgetting that she existed. In regards to being neglected she has developed a complex desire for attention and love. Her complex is providing more comfort than what she had as a child.
